The
"Pygmy Goat" came from the west coast of Africa and was
first imported to the United States in 1959 for the Oakland Bay
Zoo in California..
| The "Pygmy" goat is genetically small, cobby, and compact. It's frame is clearly defined and well angulated; limbs and head are short relative to body length. Full barreled and well-muscled, the body circumference in relation to height and weight is proportionately greater than that of other breeds. The pygmy goat is hardy, alert, and animated, good-natured and gregarious. |
Hip & Hop |
Goats in general are very lovable and make wonderful pets as
well as breeding stock. The pygmy goat is a dwarf-like milk goat,
however, most people do not use them in that capacity. They are
hardy, happy, playful, and make a wonderful pet that loves affection.
Many people "show" them in the National Pygmy Goat Association
sanctioned shows if their pygmy is registered, and they make great
4-H projects for children. They have a loving personality with
people, but I feel since they are a herd animal, they will be
more well adjusted and happy in the company of another goat.
Pygmy goats can live 10 to 15 years. A female is called a "doe",
an intact male is called a "buck", and a castrated male
is called a "wether". The average height is 15.4"
to 22.6" and they weigh approximately 40 to 50 lbs. They
come in a variety of colors and color patterns.
